34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019
The principle of the board game of the same name is applied to the struggle for survival and competition, to the luck and strategy of human beings: colorful game characters embark on a journey across unsafe islands over dark water, there is no turning back, not only the dice are falling.
34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019

All On Board

Project Description
In 2018, WELTFILME.org strengthened the network of media producers in West Africa once again, by implementing the project All On Board in Ghana's capital Accra. This time we brought together twelve young filmmakers (trainers) and twenty-one aspiring filmmakers (trainees) from Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia to develop and produce six short films on the topic "marginalization" in their respective countries.
At a 10-day workshop, the twelve filmmakers acquired skills on how to teach "Media for Peace" and taught the twenty-one participants without filmmaking experience, how to actually produce a movie. The participants created six fictional and documentary movies of approximately thirty minutes running time each.
These films were published on DVD and distributed in all three countries, including premieres and mobile cinema screenings reaching several thousand people. Additionally, the films are screened on television and distributed online, targeting an even larger audience to support dialogue among Ghanians, Sierra Leoneans and Liberians, thereby providing a voice from these countries’ youth to communicate with a world-wide audience.
The goals of the project are to 1) strengthen the media sector, 2) support media freedom in three West African countries and 3) lay the groundwork for an independent, sustainable capacity of teaching film in West-Africa on the basis of the principles of "Media for Peace" including all steps from developing scripts to production, post-production and DVD-production.

Issues of marginalization cannot be overemphasized. Many persons face discrimination in various forms which not only rob them of their dreams, but also stain the common decency of humankind and the rights everyone should enjoy.
These six short films offer a front seat to the lives of people on the margins of society and have one goal: to challenge the audience – however large or small, affluent or modest – to stand against discrimination and offer unbridled support for society’s marginalized.

All On Board

Projektbeschreibung
All On Board in Ghanas Hauptstadt Accra umsetzte.

"Africa is not only a continent of war and crisis, there is also an Africa that is alive and well, and often borne by women."
Odile Sorgho-Moulinier (United Nations)

Culture is no longer a static body of knowledge, values, practices and expressions shared and passed on by a community. It is a dynamic reality. "The Power Of Art – Women's Voices In Africa" explores how contemporary African women who choose to be professional artists claim their position, and deal with the stereotypes associated with being African and a woman. The film also focuses on the roles professional artists may play in addressing the challenges woman are faced with on the African continent.

Odile Sorgho-Moulinier (Vereinte Nationen)

Andre Willis wants nothing more than to be taken seriously as an actor. There is just one issue. He is Black and that is all the casting directors see. Sick and tired of stereotypical roles and typecasting in Hollywood, Andre decides to audition for a television remake of Glengarry Glen Ross in whiteface. After landing the role, the show becomes a sensation. But for Andre, the fame comes with a price. He feels that he is sacrificing his racial identity for a successful career. After witnessing a young fan mimic him, he can no longer mask the guilt and shame he feels. He walks away from fame and fortune with the hopes of producing his own content and hence, identity.

HOW DO I LOOK
Director: Wolfgang Busch
Documentary, Color, 80 min.
USA 1995-2006
English

34. Black International Cinema Berlin 2019
During 10 years of the making of this documentary, "How Do I Look" captures the Harlem "Ball" traditions that originated in the '70s, which were historically an offshoot from the Harlem "Drag Balls" from the '20s. Because of the loss of hundreds of members and leaders of the "Ball" community due to the HIV epidemic, "How Do I Look" was able to record an important aspect of the history and legacy that was still available. The film focuses on the Icons and Legends Pepper Labeija, Willi Ninja, Tracy Africa, Kevin Omni, Jose Xtravaganza and Octavia St. Laurent, who took their talents outside the "Ball" community successfully and opened many doors for their community. The "children" are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender African American and Hispanic members of the "Houses". Their goal is to be voted into the "Ballroom Hall of Fame" one day, the ultimate "Ballroom" achievement. Their highly competitive functions at "Balls", build their self esteem and furthers their performance skills. By living on the edge, their natural artistic progression perfected their improvisational voguing, fashion and runway performance skills on the catwalk and is the reason why they have become such trend setters and inspirations worldwide.
